Overall this album is absolutely amazing. I would absolutely recommend to anyone who’s into any kind of general pop music including the old Maroon 5 fans. I’m gonna write about a few of my favorites. Buy or stream the album here:
“One More Night”
A brilliant mid-temp pop song that let’s the listener focus on Adam’s perfect tenor pop voice. I really enjoyed the dirty yet simple drums throughout. The grungy/dirty drum sound was used a lot in this album. The reggae guitars give this song a great playful flavor while the subject and lyrics are more aggressive and frustrated. The current but classic use of dropping out the drums on the chorus is used here until the last chorus. Very simliar to other current hits such as “Whistle”, “Wild Ones”, and “Both of Us”. In my opinion, this is pop songwriting at it’s best providing contrast throughout as well as a simple TWO line chorus. I love this song.
“Payphone”
An uptempo song that they chose to introduce as the first single. While that first note in the chorus is nearly impossible for the average listener to sing along to, the song is so well-written that most try to sing it with Adam anyways. I thought the production with interesting especially in the chorus where it seems that no instrument really sticks out in the mix but vocals and drums. Everything else seems to just be adding its own element to the progression. The prechorus is fantastic in this song. The writing is great and the production is even better in how it leads into the chorus.
“Daylight”
Another great song. Simple sing-a-long chorus which is 2 lines and then “oh oh”s. Listen to the subject matter in this one. It’s really quite beautiful.
“The Man Who Never Lied”
The repeating motif in this song is well executed through the song. The song opens with that main hook and then it reappears in the chorus. A “B part” of that hook apears through the verses as well. Great writing. Take a hook and just use it all over the song in somewhat different ways. Backwards, forwards, or partially etc. The lyrics in this song are fantastic as well.
“Love Somebody”
The reoccurring motif theory is heavily used in this one as well. It’s immediately introduced in the first verse (background oo’s). The verses and lifts are my favorite parts of this song. The writing style used in the chorus is to basically repeat the chorus twice to equal one chorus but change one line or two in the second part. In this song, the lines changed in this 8 line chorus are 5 and 6.
“Fortune Teller”
I won’t get into this one much but it’s a GREAT listen. =]
“Sad”
Easily one of my favorite songs on the album. Written by Adam and James. I love the simplicity of it. The rawness of it perfectly conveys the innocence and frustration of the subject. Sometimes the best thing to write can be something as simple as stating, “I’m so sad”. Beautiful song.
“Beautiful Goodbye”
One of my favorites on the album. Crazy distorted drums that I love. The lyrics again in this song are wonderful. The “bye bye” hook used in the chorus are great. The change up for the bridge delivers a good surprise and an even better release as the listener flows into the final chorus. I appreciate the amount of soul they left in this song. It wouldn’t have been the same if it were more polished.
“Wipe Your Eyes”
Saved the best for last… in this post. Again, awesome huge dirty drums give the track some great grit. The lyrics are beautiful. They say nothing is new under the sun, but this song found a new amazing way to say “I’m here to wipe your eyes”. The prechorus lift is exceptional and makes the hit of the chorus feel so good. The vocal sample featured in the intro is used through the chorus is so crazy good, cool, clever, catchy… all the above. The lo-fi delay on the lines “across your cheek” and “we’ll be ok” is a really great touch. I love how it feels slightly off time.
“One More Night” and “Wipe Your Eyes” are my favorite songs overall. Otherwise, in my opinion, this album is killer good all-around.
Thanks for reading,
Sam
Owl City and Carly Jepsen have teamed up for this summer song. This is a great feel good pop song with an extremely simple and straight forward yet crafty lyrics that I really admire. Adam has shown that he’s a smart artist who changes with the industry. He’s putting his own sound into what’s currently hot. Huge shout out to Adam and his co-writers and producers. You can check out what billboard had to say about Good Time here and you can hear the song here. While you’re at it, be sure to take a listen to his “Shooting Star” EP. All of the songs are amazing. Gold is my favorite. It’s basically impossible for “Good Time” to be as popular as Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” but the popularity of it will sure be a huge help for OC.
“Good Time” is a great song that I look forward to hearing on the radio all summer.
I need demo singers in the following genres: Pop, Dance, and R&B. There are some great opportunities here with good songs and connected producers.
