“So Good” - B.o.B.

From a songwriting and production perspective, this song by B.o.B. is absolutely amazing. Actually it’s top notch from any perspective.  A huge shout out to Ryan Tedder for co-writing the hook and producing the song. The verses are clever and fresh and the hook is just perfect. Memorable, simple, and different.

A great feel-so-good summer song that will rule the airwaves. Be sure to check it out and while you’re at it listen to his song with Taylor Swift, “Both of Us”.  Thanks for reading!

“Call Me Maybe”

What makes this song work so well?

Instead going into the theories of songwriting again like I’ve done in previous posts, I thought I’d pinpoint the one reason why I think this song works. This song is once again, pure pop bliss. The structure is simple, the songwriting is really quite amazing pop, but there’s one thing that’s making this song tick. It has an X-factor. I haven’t heard anyone talk about this yet so I thought I’d go for it.

Listen through the song with me real quick. The X-factor first appears at 37 seconds into the song. Yes, she says the hook which in this case is the name of the song. (Welcome to songwriting 101). But there’s more! Ready? Listen to how she sings “call me maybe” throughout the whole song. The way the ‘be’ in “maybe” comes off with more ‘ee’ sound than usual and seems to have an upward bend on it. She sounds like she is smiling when she sings that hook. And that gives the song such a unique and playful character. It’s rare in todays pop creations that you can hear/tell these kinds of things but it’s so obvious in this tune and I truly believe that’s what makes this song unique and “tick”. Go listen to it now! You will hear it!
